All are invited and encouraged to welcome the stranger and visit those who are imprisoned. (See Matthew 25:31-46.)
The Task Force of United Methodist Immigration Ministries of Ohio is seeking volunteers to write letters of encouragement and provide commissary support for an asylum seeker detained by ICE.
By writing a letter of encouragement to a detained asylum-seeker, reassure them that they are welcome in our community, their community stands in solidarity with them, and they are not alone during one of the worst times of their lives. These acts make a difference.
For example, we mailed 29 birthday cards to one asylum-seeker, who told her attorney that it was the best birthday celebration ever, despite being detained. And when we contributed to the commissary account of another asylum-seeker, he used part of the donation to purchase food for fellow ICE detainees who had recently arrived with no family to support them.
