Two United Methodist Churches in Chillicothe merged their youth programs to strengthen their ministry after years of low attendance.
1 Harbor youth ministry, the idea of Rev. Therese Lehman of Walnut Street UMC and former pastor, Rev. Wes Souder of Trinity Chillicothe UMC, was created to provide fun, worship, and fellowship for youth inside and outside the churches.
Each Sunday evening, 10-22 youth in grades 7-12 attend 1 Harbor gatherings.
Initially, the group alternated weekly meetings between the two churches, a few blocks apart. As the ministry grew, a dedicated leader was hired, and the search for an off-site location for 1 Harbor to meet began.
“We wanted a place to meet that didn’t feel like church and was attractive to community youth,” said Rev. Therese Lehman of Walnut Street UMC.
Within three months, a lease became available for a space above a storefront property at a low cost. After acquiring the lease, the youth furnished the area, painted the walls, and designated the location as The Landing.
Financial support for this ministryis shared between Walnut Street UMC and Trinity UMC.
A Sunday evening 1 Harbor gathering includes fellowship, worship, interactive lessons, and games. Often, a member of the group leads the weekly gathering.
The results of investing in this ministry are evident. “The attendance has grown as well as the faith of each of the kids,” said Rev. Lehman. In addition to growing in faith, the youth have shown leadership capabilities by planning worship for their gatherings and encouraging each other in faith and life.
